I am delighted to hear via this website of the proposed family reunion of the descendents of the original Stonington settlers and I would love to attend if at all possible.
I am part of the English Cheesbrough family and have been researching the family name for more than 30 years. It is generally accepted that William Chesebrough was part of the Yorkshire Cheesbrough Family and his surname uses this spelling on all of his records in Boston, Lincolnshire. The spelling was somehow changed after he settled in Stonington and other variants have occurred including Chesebro’. I have not been able to find the actual link that connects William positively with the rest of the family but it certainly exists.
While collating early parish records in the Lincoln Archives, Lincolnshire, England, I came across a christening entry for William Chiesbrugh dated 22nd June 1594 The Parish is Tattershall near Boston and the only Church in the village is the Collegiate College Church of the Holy Trinity, built in the mid 1400's by Ralph, Lord Cromwell, Lord High Treasurer of England. This entry seems to have been accepted and is now used by genealogists in the USA as the original baptism record for William Chesebrough of Stonington Connecticut.
