Family Names in Stonington

 

    The following list of families were taken from the book *"The History of Stonington, Connecticut  1649-1900" by Richard Anson Wheeler. There are, however, only a few real founding families*. The families that eventually moved to Stonington and stayed for generations are a part of the "founding" families listed below with the "patriarch" of that family.

     *In 1668, a census of the inhabitants of the town was ordered to be taken, embracing those only who were inhabitants or heads of families. February 2nd there were to be found to be forty-three inhabitants, viz., Thomas Stanton, George Denison, Thomas Miner, John Gallup, Amos Richardson, Samuel Cheesebrough, James Noyes, Elisha Cheesebrough, Thomas Stanton, Jr., Ephraim Miner, Moses Palmer, James York, John Stanton, Thomas Wheeler, Samuel Mason, Joseph Miner, John Bennett, Isaac Wheeler, John Denison, Josiah Witter, Benjamin Palmer, Gershom Palmer, Thomas Bell, Joseph Stanton, John Fish, Thomas Shaw, John Gallup, Jr., John Frink, Edmund Fanning, James York, Jr., Nathaniel Beebe, John Reynolds, Robert Sterry, John Shaw, John Searls, Robert Fleming, Robert Holmes, Nathaniel Chesebrough, for Mrs. Anna Chesebrough, his mother, Gershom Palmer for Mrs. Rebecca Palmer, his mother, Henry Stevens, and Ezekial Main.

                        

 

Although, the above named families were the "founding" families of Stonington according to Richard A. Wheeler, there were many  families from surrounding areas that intermarried these families, such as the Burdicks, Shepards, Chapmans, etc., each and every one are more than welcome to attend the reunion. The variations in spelling such as the Minors, Miners, Chesebro, Chesebrough....again are all a part of this huge family of ours.
