* James Babcock, born in 1612, who was the progenitor of the Babcock family of Westerly and the region roundabout, first appears in Portsmouth, Rhode Island in 1642. He held the office of Commissioner from 1656 to 1659 and was by occupation a blacksmith and gunsmith. He came to Westerly with his family soon after 1664, after having sold his house and land in Portsmouth to Thomas Fish. During the year 1670 he gave testimony, calling his age 58 years, his son James 29, and his son John 26. He married 1st, Sarah__________, and he died June 12, 1679.

John Babcock died either the last of December 1684 or the very first of January 1685, for on the 6th day of January 1685, his eldest son, James Babcock, and his mother, Mrs. Mary Babcock, recognizing the English law of primogeniture as in force in Rhode Island, agreed that he might take all of the real estate of his father, which he assumed, and gave his mother one-half thereof by deed. Mrs Mary Lawton Babcock afterwards married Erasmus Babbitt on April 21, 1698.
The oldest son and child, James Babcock, was appointed guardian to the four youngest children, viz.: Elihu, Robert, Joseph and Oliver on April 21, 1698.
Deputy to the Rhode Island General Assembly from Westerly, 1682, 1684. Served in King Philip's War in the Great Swamp Fight, 1675, and land was granted his heirs for his services. Conservator of the Peace for Westerly, 1678.
